Vegan Restaurant- Because of the Internet. from Michael Yates

I recently watched The Kings of Summer. The film really impressed me with its specificity and ability to really communicate what is like to be on summer vacation as an adolescent male. It made me think and reflect on my own childhood summers. 

Summers in Indiana are hot.

My mom would drop me off at my grammies where Id hang out with my cousins.

 There was always one thing on our mind from when we woke up till when we went to bed...

We had a couple friends in the neighborhood whom we played with everyday.

We Only had a couple bikes but we made due. 

I was obsessed with Allen Iverson at the time he was a smaller player and gave me hope of one day making the league. 

 It wasn't just about basketball though, it was about friendship.

 They were the ones who first introduced me to rap music.

I look back on those days now and even though all of my friends didn't make it to 2013. I'm happy I was able to spend that time with them.

Messing around with watercolors.

Here are the finishes. The first 3 pages from Ray Bradbury’s The City. Id like to maybe finish the other 5 pages soon but we’ll see… The inks are 98% traditional all done with brush. Fun stuff! 

The school year seems to be barreling to a close Im currently scrambling to finish my final assignments but mainly focusing on bettering the story for my senior film. Over last semseter when I was developing story ideas for my film I created this character Olga " Copper Belly". It was a alternative history coldwar story that didn't quite come together. But I did really enjoy the character so I developed her a bit more and eventually one of my classmates asked to model the design.

Olga a.k.a Copper Belly. Is the only female Russian Commander. She was an orphan raised by wolves. Her stern face was carved by the  knife like winds of the russian winter. As a child she had one hero, Joseph Stalin. (whom she met later on  in life after single-handily protecting a small village from an invading army for 45 days.

Though she only shows her stern demeanor to her subordinates, she has a huge love for gloss red high heel shoes. The vast collection is always hidden away in her private quarters. She is a ruthless leader but respected by all of her men.

Bear Cop

Over the summer I created this character i called BearCop. He is this older police officer who doesn't really like being a police officer. He hates all his coworkers except for his partner (but he'd never say that) a young female chicken who is new to the force. He doesn't play by the rules and has a really bad temper. He handles all of his problems with his fist first. You're probably wondering how a guy could be so cold hearted. Well BearCop had a difficult past, after high school he went into the Navy  where he was stationed off the coast of China. During that time he fell in love with a Panda that broke his heart ( note tatto on his right arm) A broken heart can take a lifetime to mend.


One of my goals for this project was to really do something fun. My number one goal was to do something that I would enjoy. I love having time to really create character and think about how they live their lives outside of the story that i tell on screen. One think i love to is sketch out how they would order coffee at Starbucks, and how they react if the barista gets the order wrong.

The final product came up short to my expectations but I still really enjoy the character and will try to do some more stuff with him in the future. I ended up not using the above story because it was way too complex and decided to go with something smaller. It still did a good job of conveying his character but just not quite as fun as I would've hoped.

I had a lot of fun with this character and hope to do a few more stories with him in the future.
